Man, I haven't heard them since 1985!

I can't believe they're still making music! A lot of times when I am looking through the new releases, I'll see that someone has a new album coming out, first one in ten years, and I say, "Wow, whatever happened to them?" And here they are, still rockin'. Hopefully the new stuff is as good as the old stuff. So here are a few bands that have come out with new CDs this year that I hadn't heard much from in years (now I feel old). ps, if you've been following one of the above band's every move for the past 20 years, please don't flame me. Instead let the rest of us know of which missed CDs are worth revisiting. And if there is anyone I am forgetting, please leave a comment.

The new Black Crowes album is fantastic. It's actually a double album - the second part, "After the Freeze," comes as a free download if you buy "Before the Frost." Both were recorded in front of a live audience at Levon Helm's farm in upstate New York, but they sound a lot better than your typical live recording. The rejuvenated Crowes are better than ever, in my opinion. They have come a long, long way from the days of covering "Hard to Handle" and being viewed as something of a poor man's Southern Rolling Stones. The addition of Luther Dickinson from North Mississippi All-Stars has really added a lushness to their sound, and Chris Robinson is still one of the most distinctive voices in rock music. The songwriting on the last two albums (the other being "Warpaint") is amazing, so many different styles and textures and yet it all sounds very much like the Black Crowes - blues boogie with a folksy, hippie edge and just a hint of gospel melodrama. Gram Parsons dreamt of something he called Cosmic American Music and I truly believe the Crowes are the first to fulfill that dream. Saw them at the Riviera a few weeks ago and they were amazing. Great post, David!

One goof-up - the free downloadable album is ...Until the Freeze," not "After."
